Can MARPE help with breathing issues?
MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) is an orthodontic treatment designed to expand the upper jaw in suitable patients. While there may be a relationship between upper jaw width and nasal airflow, we do not claim that MARPE will improve breathing or resolve breathing difficulties.
Why is an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) assessment needed before MARPE?
Breathing difficulties can have many different causes. These may include nasal obstruction, allergies, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, a deviated septum, or other Ear, Nose and Throat conditions.
At Aligned Orthodontics, an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)assessment is required before MARPE treatment to help identify or rule out anyunderlying issues that may be contributing to breathing difficulties.
Does MARPE treat breathing problems?
No. MARPE is an orthodontic treatment and should not be considered a treatment for breathing problems. If an underlying Ear, Nose and Throat condition is identified, this should be assessed and managed by the appropriate healthcare professional.
Why is it important to investigate breathing concerns before MARPE?
Understanding the possible causes of breathing difficulties is important when considering any treatment. An ENT assessment can help ensure that potential underlying conditions are identified before proceeding with MARPE.
Could MARPE affect the nasal airway?
Expansion of the upper jaw can alter the anatomy of the nasal region. However, the effect on an individual's breathing or nasal airflow cannot be guaranteed, and MARPE should not be undertaken with the expectation that it will improve breathing.
What happens if I have breathing concerns and amconsidering MARPE?
If you have concerns about your breathing, these should be assessed appropriately before orthodontic treatment. At Aligned Orthodontics, an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) assessment is required before MARPE to help rule out underlying issues and ensure that your treatment is considered safely and appropriately.
