Retainer Instructions: The Key to Keeping Your Smile Straight

Thursday, August 14, 2025

Your braces may be finished, but keeping your smile straightis a life long commitment. Here are answers to the most common questions patients ask about wearing, cleaning, and caring for their retainers.

First 2weeks: Wear them full-time, only removing them for eating, drinking, or brushing.

After that: Switch to 12 hours overnight (from after dinner until breakfast).

Do:
✔ Clean your teeth before putting your retainers in.
✔ Store them in a crush-proof case when not in use.
✔ Clean them daily with cold water, a toothbrush, anda little antibacterial handwash.
✔ Use special cleaning tablets occasionally (no morethan twice per week).

Don’t:
✘ Eat with them in, they’re notdesigned for that.
✘ Leave them where pets can find them (dogs lovechewing retainers!).
✘ Use toothpaste (too abrasive) or hot water (itmelts the plastic).

Why do I need to wear a retainer?

Braces or aligners move teeth into position, but once treatment ends, teeth naturally try to shift back. A retainer keeps them stableand protects your new smile. Without one, teeth can begin to drift withinhours. Wearing your retainer regularly is the only way to maintain your results for life.

How long should I wear my retainer each day?

Wear your retainers full time for the first two weeks afteryour braces or aligners are removed. After this period, wear them every night for at least ten to twelve hours. This routine keeps your teeth securely in place.

Do I need to wear retainers forever?

Yes. Teeth can move at any stage of life, even many yearsafter treatment. To prevent this natural movement, lifetime retainer wear isrecommended. Think of it as long-term maintenance for your smile.

How should I clean my retainer?

Use a soft toothbrush with soap and cold water. Clean them every day to prevent plaque and bacteria buildup. You can also use cleaning tablets once or twice a week for a deep clean. Always rinse your retainers thoroughly before placing them back in your mouth.

What should I avoid when cleaning my retainer?

Do not use toothpaste. it can make them cloudy and brittle this can make them snap.
Do not use boiling or hot water, as heat can warp or melt the material.
Do not use harsh chemicals or mouthwash to clean them.
Cold or lukewarm water is always safest.

How do I store my retainer safely?

When you are not wearing your retainer, always place it in a crush-proof case. Never wrap it in a tissue or leave it loose in a bag, as it can easily be damaged or lost. Keep it away from pets, especially dogs, as they will often chew retainers.

What should I bring to appointments?

Always bring your retainers to every visit. This allows the team at Aligned to check their fit, ensure they are in good condition, and make adjustments if needed.

What happens if I lose or break my retainer?

If your retainer breaks, is lost, or has been chewed by a pet, you can buy a replacement immediately on our website. A digital scan was taken at your brace removal appointment and the company retainers 4life has access to this. There will be a charge for any replacements. Do not wait for your next appointment, as even a short delay can allow your teeth to move out of position.

You are now able to order new retainers from our website and have them delivered to your house through this link.

What if my retainer feels tight?

This usually means your teeth have started to shift because you have not worn it enough. Begin wearing it full time again, and call the practice if it remains tight or uncomfortable. We review all completed orthodontic treatments either NHS or private for 12 months. If you have not worn your retainer as advised and a consultation appointment is needed after the 12 months review period then a consultation fee will apply for a discussion with the orthodontist.

Why is it important not to delay action if I notice a problem?

Teeth can begin moving back to their old positions in just a few hours, even though it takes months or years to align them. That is why prompt attention to any issue, such as a broken or missing retainer is essential to protect your smile.

If retreatment is needed due to not wearing the retainer as advised then a private orthodontic fee will apply to have your teeth restraightened.

*The NHS only provide one course of orthodontic treatment for FREE so bare this in mind if you do not wear your retainer as advised.

What is the most important thing to remember?

Your retainers are your insurance policy for a straight, confident smile.
Wear them as directed, clean them daily, and store them safely. With consistent care, your smile will stay as perfect as the day your braces came off.
