Can You Get Free Braces on Universal Credit in Manchester?

Friday, May 1, 2026

If you are on Universal Credit and thinking about braces, it’s easy to assume they might be covered. The reality is a bit more specific, and often misunderstood.

In reality, free NHS orthodontic treatment at Aligned Orthodontics is limited to under 18s. Even then, it’s not automatic, you must be referred by a general dentist (GDP) and assessed by a specialist. Treatment is only approved if you meet the NHS clinical criteria, meaning your case has to be considered medically necessary rather than cosmetic (using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need).

For adults, NHS braces are very rarely available, regardless of being on Universal Credit, unless there’s a serious health or functional issue and this would be carried out at the hospital from a referral from your general dentist not Aligned Orthodontics.

So, are braces free if you’re on Universal Credit?

Not exactly. Universal Credit can help cover basic NHS dental care, like check-ups or fillings, but it doesn’t automatically make braces free. Orthodontic treatment (like braces) follows its own set of NHS rules.

Who actually qualifies for free NHS braces?

To get braces on the NHS, you usually need to meet two key conditions:

Be under 18 years old

Have a clear medical need, not just cosmetic concerns

This is assessed using something called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, a system that scores how severe your dental issue is.

For adults, NHS braces are very rare. They’re typically only approved if there’s a serious health problem, like significant jaw misalignment.

Does being on Universal Credit make any difference?

In short: no. While Universal Credit may reduce or cover general dental costs, it doesn’t override NHS orthodontic eligibility rules. If your case isn’t considered medically necessary, you won’t qualify for free braces, regardless of your benefits.

How do you actually get braces on the NHS?

This is where a lot of people get caught out: you can’t apply for NHS braces yourself.

Here’s how the process works:

Start with your dentist
Your regular dentist checks your teeth and decides if a referral is needed.

Get referred to an orthodontist
If appropriate, your dentist will refer you. You can’t skip this step.

Wait for an appointment
NHS orthodontic services often have waiting lists, which can be long.

Attend your orthodontic assessment
At this appointment, they’ll take X-rays, photos, and impressions of your teeth.

Eligibility decision
Your case is scored using the IOTN system.

If it’s severe enough → you may get free NHS treatment (Only if under 18)

If not → you’ll likely need private treatment

Can you refer yourself for NHS braces?

No, you must be referred by a dentist (or occasionally a doctor). This is a strict part of the NHS system.

How long does it take?

Waiting times vary, but it’s common to wait months or even a few years, depending on demand in your area (including Manchester).

What if you don’t qualify?

If your case isn’t considered medically necessary, NHS treatment won’t be offered. In that case, your only option is private braces, which typically cost:

Around £2,500 to £6,000+, depending on the type and complexity

The bottom line

Being on Universal Credit does not automatically mean you can get free bracesr. What really matters is your age and how severe your dental issue is, based on NHS criteria.
