Starting your lingual braces journey is an exciting step towards a confident new smile. Because these braces are fitted on the inside of your teeth, they’re discreet, but they can also take a little getting used to. Here’s everything you need to know about caring for your braces, what to expect, and how to make the process as comfortable as possible.
✅ Do’s
Brush your teeth, gums especially next to the brackets, and braces at least three times per day.
Use brace wax to stop irritation.
Take pain relief if you’re feeling uncomfortable (especially before adjustment visits).
Speak, read out loud, or sing daily to help your speech return to normal.
Call your orthodontist if you notice sharp wires or breakages.
Book your next appointment before leaving the clinic.
❌ Don’ts
Don’t eat chewy, crunchy, or sticky foods (like nuts, crusty bread, chewing gum, or boiled sweets).
Don’t drink fizzy or sugary drinks, they can leave permanent white or brown marks on your teeth.
Don’t pick at your brace, chew pens, or bite your nails.
Don’t skip or miss appointments.
What to Expect
Mild discomfort: Some aching may start within a few hours of fitting and usually peaks around day two before easing by day three. Pain relief can help, and it’s a good idea to take some before your adjustment appointments.
More saliva than usual: This is your brain’s natural reaction, mistaking the braces for food. Don’t worry, this will settle as you get used to them.
Changes in speech: Lingual braces can temporarily affect how you talk. The best way to speed up recovery?
Practice speaking and reading aloud: We’ll also give you the Rainbow Passage, a short exercise designed by a speech therapist, to read three times a day. Singing can help too!
Keeping on Track
Appointments: Your braces need adjusting every 6–8weeks, so make sure to book your next visit before leaving the practice.
Guidelines: Missing three appointments or breaking your braces three times may mean your treatment has to be discontinued so try your best to stay on top of your care.
Avoid sugary and fizzy drinks: These can leave permanent white or brown marks on your teeth. Water is always the best choice.
